Knowledge & the Ideological Constraint of Ambivalence

چکیده
Knowledge & the Ideological Constraint of Ambivalence James E. Monogan III (Under the direction of Marco R. Steenbergen.) The idea of a political culture of ambivalence posits that American society embraces conflicting values, ultimately leading citizens to have trouble settling their attitudes on public policy. Interestingly, little consideration has been given to the prospect that sophistication might shape the way individuals process conflicting information. In this paper, I argue that integrative complexity significantly moderates the tendency for coincident values to lead to conflicted, unstable attitudes. Through cross-sectional study of the 1987 NES pilot and a longitudinal study of the 1992-1997 NES panel, I show that value conflict indeed has differential effects on individuals of differing levels of political sophistication.
